Simple answer: I was bored at work, got talking, started laughing about a particularly dubious bible verse, said I would make a website, actually did it. Yes, there is a first for everything.
And before you get too worked up, Dirty Bible Verses is just about having a fun look at a book that has had more influence (and started more wars) than any other piece of literature in human history.
Moralising crusaders are always quick out of the blocks to attack sex, violence and other ‘smut’ when it appears in films, books, commercials, video games, music and pretty much anything else remotely fun, but what about when it is in the bible?
Not many people spend their time wading through the scriptures front to back, but if they did they’d discover an amazing collection of stories that include such extreme violence, murder, prostitution, rape, seduction and immorality that they’d easily be R-rated if someone made them into a film.
The one aim of this website is to put a smirk on your face. Actually it’s also about giving you some cool-ass quotes that you can break out next time you’re drinking a few beers with mates.
It’s also a reminder that crazy shit has been happening (and getting written down) for thousands of years. Like the bible says: “What has been will be again, what has been done will be done again; there is nothing new under the sun.” (Ecclesiastes 1:9)
FYI: For the more scholarly types, all quoted verses are from the New International Version. I figured best to pick one of the most common translations and stick to it for all of them. You can double check my quotes at www.biblica.com.
